Ain't a damned thing wrong with the 4-150 - it's derived largely from the AMC six anyhow.

However, using a Nippondenso from the later (1991-up) Jeep will not be a direct bolt-in swap. Your 1988 will use either the Delco CS121 or Delco CS130 alternator, which is internally regulated. The back housing of the CS130 should be ~4-5/8" across the body, the CS121 is somewhat smaller.

If you have the CS130, you can easily score a 100A upgrade - the RENIX I6 used either a 61A, 80A, or 100A unit from the factory. Any competent rewind shop can upwind a Delco CS-130 to 140A or so without any trouble at all, and you'll get a good stable unit.

If you go with the 1991-up Nippondenso, you must install an external regulator to make it work! (The later ND-equipped rigs have a regulator external to the alternator, it's inbuilt into the PCM.)

I've also heard reports from the field on using a CS144 (larger case, found in luxury GM passenger cars and a number of light trucks) to replace the CS130, but I don't have any details on that.

I am not sure about replacements on the CS121, but I am inclined to think that the bracketry should be the same (therefore, replacements for the CS130 should work for the CS121. But, I won't swear to it without more information...)
