Default Almost bought a Toyota...

Hi all,

So I was close to buying a 2000 Toyota Hilux truck, but the seller sold it to the guy before me. He was there first so, fair. It had 113,000 miles, a 2,4 L diesel. Double cab and real nice.

Now, I have a possibility to purchase a 1997 XJ with 81,000 miles on it, with a big roof rack + 4 headlights. A small grill guard with 2 headlights on. Tinted windows in the back (this plastic that you can remove and add whenever), dog gates.
New muffler, new manifold, new battery, new front speakers under 2012. No rust, NP242 transfer case, AW4-transmission.
The only thing that doesn't work is the button for fog lights and a glitch to the rear speakers.

Of course everybody at work are telling me to stay away from the Jeep and wait for another Toyota to come for sale (which will never happen, they are super rare and sells right away), since everybody knows that Jeeps are nothing but problems... Since Toyota lasts forever and more reliable and yada yada...
The -97 XJ would sell for almost half the price of the truck, and it's a good deal, I know.

What do you all think?
I have a -90 XJ already and another Jeep is never bad!

I am on my 2nd XJ now and with some regular maintenance, they have been THE most reliable vehicles that I have ever owned (next to my '76 Power Wagon, but it's not a DD).

Got to hear more ***** today when I showed a friend the XJ Im gonna pick up on Saturday..
"Oh let me know when I should come and tow you with my Hilux"

Sure it's all good fun but one always get questioned about buying a Jeep.
If I would buy an Audi quattro, no one ask anything, just think it's cool and what not...
It's weird, guess it IS a Jeep thing and they just don't understand!

Haters gonna hate... Just remind them to be VERY careful not to overheat those aluminum engines in those ricers... With that in mind, I'll keep my cast iron straight 6 thank you.

Yeah true..
But since they just know those ricers are better than Jeeps, without ever owned one, they're hard to convince..

Oh well, lucky me that I have this forum with Jeep lovers and our own Swedish forum!

It's the American way! Jeep

i'd kill for a diesel hilux, but i guess its bc we simply cannot get them on this side of the planet. what kind of drivetrain do XJs typically have by you? the VM diesel or gas motors?

Well I'd love a Hilux too, baddest pick-up over here, period. But comparing to an XJ is comparing apples and oranges.

Seems like most XJ's are the good ole 4.0 but many diesels too. Gas is about $2 per litre but so is diesel. And we also have higher taxes on older diesel autos except trucks.
And lots of people gets diesel from their work, which is not legal, so they save tons of money because of that.

The newer diesels are so effective, 0.4-0.5 litre per 10 km compared to the XJ on 1.2-1.4 litre per 10 km. (Our way of measuring mpg) so a new diesel is tax-free for a few years.

We have many weird laws about vehicles... Our Audi A6 1.9 TDI costs about 7-8000 SEK a year in taxes while the XJ is 2-2500 SEK...
Don't ask how it works...

Then add 90% taxes on the gas and diesel... Then up to 60% income taxes as well... Yay socialism...
