i got a brand new HD tierod for my XJ and i need to align the tires. so i did the measuring test from the same point on the tread on the back then front. the back was 57" and i got the front to 56 7/8" but the tires do not seem straight. the front tires look like they stick out more than the rear tires. they are 32x11.5 with 3.75 backspacing.

take the rear measurement out of your head.....that doesnt mean anything
take a measurement from the bottom of your front of each tire
now measure the top of each tire... if the measurement is the same then your god
if not then make adjustments till its good...theres a website around somewhere
that helps explain it more but i'm heading out the door i can try to find it later

I guess it depends on what you are trying to align, whether this is correct. If you are adjusting toe-in, then you need to measure in the front and rear, about the middle of the tire, like you have said you've done.
That said, on to your last question: Do both front tires stick out further, equally on both sides, or does one seem to stick out further than the other (probably driver's side if you have lifted and haven't shifted your axle over toward the passenger side at all)?

gpXJ has it right.
to measure toe in, you measure the front and rear of the front tires, about middle, using the same tread block on both measurements. which you said you have done with a respectable 1/8 toe in. sounds like you've got that right.
so, as gp said, does your axle look like it's off to one side? if so, then yes, you have to adjust your adjustable track bar.
otherwise, it's possible you have wheels with different backspacing.

I'd take it to a chain automotive center. Most offer a 3 year or "lifetime" alignment service. Pay one price, have it aligned as many times as you want.
