I might be wrong but I think if it says 50psi it means 50psi at max load.

when you get your new 32's, don't run them any higher than 28psi on the road.
you can air them down to about 15 on the trail without worrying about bustin a bead.

my previous post was only stating that most people over inflate their tires, which in time destroys the belts making them crown and wander all over the road.

Just because your tire is rated at 50 psi does not mean you need to run that high. that same tire can and does fit more thatn an xj. so the weight of your rig should dictate how much air you run. If you look in the door for the manufacturer placard it will give an good start of what is recommended and even if you have put larger tires on it will still work ok for you.

x2 On the over inflating!
Load range D & E range tires are basically for use on heavy trucks that haul heavy loads. When they have a MAX load rating of x number of pounds at 50 psi, that is for something like a one ton pick up, maybe hauling a cord of wood and pulling a loaded trailer, not for a 4000 lb or less Cherokee.
I'm running 35x12.50 r15s at 22 lbs on the road, and tire wear and gas mileage are good.

Ok this is a sweet thread, actually answered quite a few questions I had.
So I run my 31-15's at about 28 on the road in my dd/rig and it drives true. 30+ and it gets bouncy and bump steers bad
Usually 20 on the trail.
On my tow rig, 40 in the front on d rated michelins for traction/steering and 35 rear on my BFG's
Perfect!
I'm not a "noob" with full size vehicles, but with the XJ I am
Big difference!
And I'll never go back! Unless I gotta haul wood...
