Hey guys!
Well, My new jeep does have a few issues to work out and i'm just working my way through it. I have an issue with my air filter rattling at certain times on start up, shut down, and idle. As you can see by the photo it's some type of aftermarket filter that has a metal body. The previous owner must of put this on and threw out the original.
The filter body is just laying in the bay with no support and and vibrates against the intake manifold.
Any ideas on what I should do to support it? Should I order a factory set-up and throw the aftermarket one out?
For starters I guess i'm not sure if the one I have is worth keeping.
Thanks for the help!
Mike

that pic is terrible.......but keep the aftermarket filter. your jeep will breath easy. just make a support brkt for the tube. search the net and look at other aftermarket filter set-ups for cherokees. if you find some pics, just look at how they mount thiers and make one just like it....should be very simple.
i made my own but i cant really explain how i did it. i would have to show a pic and my computer and camera are not getting along.....
EDIT: thats a way better pic!!! and now that i can see it, i would ditch it for another aftermarket setup....that looks a little ghetto!! a stock one ordered from jeep will br thru the roof as far as price goes.
look into the rustys, arraid, or k&n cold air intakes.......k&n is a little expensive for my blood

Hey mike, looks like that thing could use a new filter at the least (or a good cleaning!). The tube with a bit of cleaning looks like it could be ok with some support. I know theres some fairly cheap filters at advance...they also have whole kits (universal) for like 50$ and a bit of modding can turn out alright....i would get that thing secured asap. When i was doing mine, it had actually wobbled itself into my throttle cable, sending me for a floored ride in 4x4 on snow covered roads. Anywho heres a pic of how i did it, its not pretty but is functional.

I basically hacked up the stock airbox, rebolted it and clamped the tube to the box...cutting the rubber hose thats factory off of the TB makes for an easier install IMO....think i cut it after the 3rd rib...and yes i know you dont have the airbox, but im sure theres a cheap one in a yard near you!

You did a nice job!
Thanks for the safety tip! In the morning I'm gonna make a support bracket. I think your right about the filter,I'm going to buy one in the morning.

i'll be honest, all that crap looks completely buju. i would have hydrolocked my motor like 20 times already with a setup like that. why dont you guys look into a cowl snorkle and actually make it a cold air intake.

Get rid of that junk.
It's gonna end up filling your engine full of water if you wheel in any wet areas or hit any big puddles while on the road and it looks like it has been soaked in mud/rust anyways and is probably currently performing worse than the stock setup.

I have hydro locked a moter its not fun. An open air filter is great for a honda or even a mall craler. If your into (off road jeeps) I would grab a factory air box from a bone yard and put a high flow filter into it. And you could add a snorkel to it later. You could put a open air filter in the coil but I personally wouldn't. Just my 2 cents worth a million

You could also build a heat sheild out of some ductboard or sheetmetal to isolate the filter form the hot underhood temps. You could use the heatshield to support the airtube/filter. Or you could use the factory lower half of the airbox and make a custom lid to fully enclose your filter and draw cool, unheated air from behind the headlight. Many folks have done the heatshield thing before, so hopefully someone will post up a pic!
