All this for less than 3 horsepower? Why?
So many other mods with more gains for lots less work.

I think Cruiser is saying no, it's not possible with the simple hand tools that you have in your garage.

You're such a good sport!! LOL.
Want more power? Let's get on with it.
89 has a good ECU.
Have you indexed your distributor?
Installed a modified downpipe without the crush?
Installed a 60mm throttle body from www.strokedjeep.com?
Got a premium cap and rotor with brass contacts? NGK copper plugs?
Which of my Tips have you completed?

LOL!!! I have gone down your list and checked off a few things. I did that when I first got the XJ. The only one on the list above I've done is the plugs and dist cap. She was running great until the oil pump failed. Since it had been running great, was full of oil, and the pressure had been slowing falling for a few weeks I chalked it up to a bad sending unit. At least until the tapping started. 20 miles from home.
So now I have this taptapknock sound and am looking at a new motor. This one has at least 165000 miles on it, maybe more. I put a new oil pump in and cleaned the 1/4" of sludge out of the oil pan. The top side under the valve cover is surprisingly clean. But when I had the oil pan off I could see the the loose timing chain.
So, I have contacted Golen about one of their strokers. I think it will be either them or one from Mopar performance.
Thanks again cruiser54!

Just because you have a taptapknock sound doesn't mean you have to get rid of it just yet.
I've had a taptapknock sound for more than 40k miles and I'm still running really strong with solid oil pressure. I even put in new rod bearings and got an extra 20k miles of complete silence. It's coming back, but it's still a very small sound.
Run it till it blows.

Just not to far

and just for kinda fyi: Chad said he can make me a 4.6 stroker that will run on 87 octane. I plan on having him fit the roller rockers during build and will add the other bits and pieces (24lb injector-CA intake, headers, etc) before install. Waiting on his return call so we can iron out the details.

With a new Melling high volume oil pump, I have mucho plenty oil pressure. And since the core charge is roughly equal to shipping, and Golen doesn't have a core charge anyway, running it till it blows is precisely my plan.

$5500.00 for a dyno'ed and broken in ready to run 4.6 stroker with 24lb injectors, roller rockers, forged pistons, oil pan, timing cover, full of oil and running on regular pump gas. Chad said I may not get the 270hp with the lower compression but I shouldn't lose more than 5% (I think he said maybe 10 to 15) but torque should be the same. He still thinks that 300HP is possible with the regular gas. I plan to add the 63mm throttle body and headers with a new exhaust system.
After a loooong talk with the wife, I'll be placing the order as soon as I get back from this out if town work coming up next week.
The plan is to place the order and then pull mine. He did say that they're running about 3 or 4 weeks behind (he sold one between our talks today!). Detail the engine bay, clean and check all ground points, service the tranny and TC, add a WJ MC and booster. Rebuild or replace the steering gearbox. Maybe replace the motor mounts. LOL!!
Anything else I could do while the front end is empty?
I know it doesn't look like it, but inside I'm stoked!!!!

She's gonna be sittin on a set of Brown Dog Super brackets, so I won't need to worry about breaking those:-). Save my headers and rad too!
I'm aiming for 300HP and 350ft/lbs of torque. Bored TB, CAI, headers and free flow exhaust, ignition upgrades should be damn close.
