I bought a felpro gasket for my intake/exhaust manifolds. there's a good 1/4" of gasket not covering up the intake port. I'm going to gasket match the ports, at least. anyone else notice this ?

I took my felpro one back and used the gasket that came with the manifold.

What manifold did you get? Mine was dorman.

I didn't get one. I'm going to repair mine and swap intake manifolds.

I'm trying to find a place to get new bolts/studs.

I had the same issue when I did my swap. I did some Dremmel work around the ports and evened out the lumps where the injectors mount. It will be a pain in the butt to get all of the aluminum shavings out of the intake.

Normal. Match port it and the head.

I'm not messing with the head. I matched up the intake and gasket, that's as far as I'm going. I found a dorman bolt set on rockauto, so I ordered it along with some motor mounts. going to do all this next weekend.

I took my air hose and blew the intake out, washed it (again) and air dried it (again). all looks well.

Aw, come on. Finish the job.

I will report back with a real world gain or loss from the intake swap. I may or may not partake in frequent acceleration contests with said jeep, so I've already got a bar. I've been trying to cook up a halfway decent TRUE cold air intake setup, but side from cutting the cowl or extending the intake beyond the radiator, I see no remedy. I am trying my damnest to remove the 90* bend down to the throttle body, but I don't see an answer for that either, aside from cutting out the tb mount and relocating it. but let's face it, this is a jeep and that kind of effort will not be given. I am tempted to bolt an air filter to the throttle body and hang some kind of heat deflector off the hood in an effort to keep heat away from it, but I don't think that'll work very well, either. we shall see. I've been scouring intakehoses.com and found a better 90, but it still sucks having that bend in the system.

heat sheilding the bottom of the intake manifold and the top of the exhuast manifolds and wraping the fuel rail. bored throttle body and and hood vent will do alot but with the non cross flow head your throwing alot of time and effort for little to no gain.

yeah, I know. I'm not boring the tb or cutting holes in my hood. it is what it is. once this engine dies I'll most likely swap a gm atlas in it's place. until then, I'd at least like this one to be the best it can with minimal input. it runs great now, I have no complaints. if this stuff didn't need addressed one way or another I wouldn't be messing with it. it has an exhaust leak at the head and a crack in the collector, why not swap intakes since it has to come off. I wont find any aftermarket pieces as good as the factory stuff, so I'll salvage what I can of it and keep racking up miles.

ok I'm about 1.5 hours into this. changed my motor mount, installed the new manifold gasket. everything so far has been pretty easy. the motor mount sucked. the rubber was broken into 3 pieces and I think as a result it twisted the bracket the big bolt goes through. anyway got the intake to put on and plug everything back in. gonna have to do something with some vacuum lines I see. oh well.

What does the gasket look like on the head? If you hog out the intake to the gasket and then it steps down to the head, that is bad. If the head is as big as the gasket, then OK to match the intake to the gasket.

On a BBC, it is better to use oval intake on a rectangular head vs. a rectangular intake on a oval head.

the gasket was pretty close on the head side. I looked at it before I put the intake on, I thought about dremeling it if needbe since there was so much room in the engine bay.

everything went back together pretty smooth. I'll check the bolts again later this week. can't say much for performance other than the engine doesn't sound like it's working as hard during normal driving. midrange seems to be a bit stronger. I reset the computer, as well, so I'm sure after a month or so it'll be about as good as it can get. I did have to run a new brake booster vacuum hose, modify one of the smaller ones coming off the firewall and plug off a port on the side of the 99+ intake manifold.

I'm happiest about changing that broken motor mount.

Yup... typical driver's side wore-out mount.
