93 jeep Cherokee sport

I just purchased my first jeep and I'm wondering when I put it in 4x4 dose it only say part time? How do I know when it is engaged? Please help I feel stupid

Engine: 4.0 with all of the noise and clatter

Part time refers to you should only use it off the pavement. If it was full time you could keep the 4x4 engaged on the pavement.
