Default 88 xj rear end questions

Don’t know the name for the part missing, but I know it’s missing. Is this rear end screwed and I need to replace it? Or can it be saved? I believe this is the beefier rear end (Dana 44?) I’m new to cars so I don’t know if I named the part right, sorry. I believe that because I think it has a factory tow package. Also, this is the only picture I have so if I need more I will upload when I can as this Jeep is still broke down in my grandpas yard. Thanks for any help guys! So excited for this!

Okay, sorry I don’t know anything. I know I don’t have any more pictures, but do you think it can be saved by getting a new cover for it? From what I am told the rear end is locked up and we don’t know why. Eventually when I get it on stands at my house I will upload more pictures.

Okay, well I guess I will start looking for a new rear end. Any suggestions on what I should get and what Jeep I can pull it off of?

This is the only picture I have of the engine bay as of right now.
It’s an 88, I believe with a 4.0 and I do not know which transmission. It has 2wd 4h and 4L though.

Looks like an automatic to me unless the old manual transmissions had dipsticks.

On my phone. Cant see photos.
So, he needs a 3.55 rear axle from an 87 to 2001 Cherokee.

Okay, and I’m assuming from earlier comments it needs to be out of an automatic and a 4.0 motor as well? But otherwise any Jeep from 87 to 01 will work? How can I tell if it’s a 3.55?

Ideally you would want a 29 spline Chrysler 8.25 out of a 97-01 auto 4.0 Cherokee, but if you are on an extreme budget and don't plan on bigger tires or offroading then a Dana 35 can be found for next to nothing.

I do plan on off roading eventually, I also plan on a small lift and putting it on 31s. How will I be able to tell what tear end it is? Count the splines?

91-01 will either have a Dana 35 rear or Chrysler 8.25 rear. A quick Google search will show some pictures of the two axles and how to tell the difference. 91-95 Chrysler 8.25 axles are 27 spline and 97-01 are 29 spline, 96 models could have either one and the only way to tell is by pulling the axle shafts and counting the splines, that's why I recommended getting one out of a 97-01 that way you know it will be a 29 spline, unless someone swapped it out.
