4 wheel drive upgrade
Hey guys, I have an 01 jeep Cherokee sport 2 wheel drive I'm going to change that to 4 wheel drive. Although I'm a good mechanic therr things I don't know. That being said I'm handy cap when it comes to transmissions and transfer cases this is my first 4×4 I've owed; by the way LOVE THE JEEP LIFE; so do I need to replace the Trans or does the transfer case go in place of the rear tail section of the trans.

The BEST way to do this is to get a low-mile 4x4 transmission. The transfer case will already be bolted up to it.
It is possible to separate the two and bolt a transfer case to your transmission, but you'll need the adapter, and will need to confirm that they have the same amount of splines. Some additional work may be necessary.
The easiest way to do this is find a 4x4 in your junk yard and just pull both.

The Grand Cherokee front axle is low pinion. If you're going through the trouble to do this swap, continue to look for a high pinion Dana 30 out of a normal cherokee. Much more desirable.
Look for a parts jeep and buy it whole.See if you can find one rusted out bad or has a blown motor cheap. You need the trans the t case both axles front and rear both driveshafts the 4x4 shifter and linkage etc etc.Its cheaper to buy a parts jeep then pieces from a junkyard. And with the parts jeep you can see how stuff goes before you take it off.If your **** like me take pictures before you take stuff apart and use sandwich bags marked where the bolts go.

^What he said^ Then look for a complete 97-99 XJ with a blown engine and buy the entire Jeep you will need quite a few parts before your finished with this job..........Or sell this on and buy a 97-99 XJ 4x4 and be done with it.

Do you have some sort of sentimental attachment to the 2WD. The easiest thing to do is to sell the 2WD and find a solid 4WD. The entire drivetrain will have to be swapped (except for maybe the rear axle), and when you're finished, you'll still just be right where you would be now if you started with a 4WD to begin with.

I agree with what everyone else has said. Unless you are really attached to this XJ, I would sell the 2WD and buy a 4WD. You would be saving an enormous amount of time and frustration by going that route.

Being older 4wd 4.0 Cherokees plentiful and cheap...you would be better off just getting another used Jeep. Time is money and you will save a bunch of it...and all the parts necessary to upgrade will likely equal the price of the used Jeep.
