If you're going to do it right, its going to cost you up front. Like you said, you can't have it crapping out on you because its your DD. Save up, order parts over time and when you have everything you need, save up and have it done professionally OR have an experienced person help you do the install.
I rely on my jeep as a DD for work, without it I cannot report to rigs. Thus I could not afford to put parts on here and there and have my jeep on jack stands for a week while I installed shocks, then waited for the rest of the suspension. Sure, I could have ordered everything on one paycheck, but like you said, there are a host of other costs that come first so I buy chunks every so often and finally when its all here I will take it and have it installed and be on my merry way.
Buy what you WANT, over time and you will be MUCH happier in the end, in addition to having a reliable ride you put quality pieces in.
