I've been running 2 years now without the SYE and cv driveshaft. I do need one, I'm slowly losing fluid around the yolk while driving, but I have been getting by without it this long. SYE is the very next thing on my list though aside from installing this durango steering box I have sitting here

I absolutely had to as well on my 99. A transfer case drop helps but it's mainly for the 3 inch lift. 4.5 is still out of my comfort zone for a TC drop only. SYE's can go for around $190. You'll also need a front driveshaft, bolts for the yoke, and you'll need to get an angle finder to set up the rear end correctly. You'll be buying shims. Most likely 4 degrees.

I am running 4.5" plus an additional 1" block in the rear. I do not have an SYE, and it treats me fine. No vibrations, no noise and no binding. I think it depends on the Jeep and the over condition of the rear leafs and so on. Also, I have the optional NP242 TC in mine, which is longer then the NP231, so would think it would be worse.... but so far....
My suggestion is to get your lift, tune it and run it, and see how YOUR xj behaves with it. Maybe you will need one, maybe not.... seems to be a good split of opinions going anyways

That's what I have on mine... no driveline vibes, but I'm still losing fluid because the stock driveshaft is too short for this height... SYE to do it right, T-case drop is just a temporary bandaid... (granted I've been on mine 2 years... still only just getting by with it, need an SYE)
