So i was just wondering if you can fit a 33x12.5x15" tire in the cargo area with the back seat sitting upright and locked in position (on both sides)?
Im getting 33s here soon and i want to be able to carry a spare back there. If it cant go there with the seat up then Im buying either a Surco 45x60 or Kargo Master 52x60 roof rack and locking it up there with a Big 'effin chain. I like rear tire carriers but they are so expensive and i think it makes the jeep look ugly.

I couldn't even get my 31x10.5 BFG AT to fit in my 1998 in the side mounting location.
I had to lay it down in the middle of the cargo area, & tie it down to the 4 D-rings.

Yes to be CLEAR!!! LAYING IT DOWN WILL WORK FOR ME. AS LONG AS IT LOCKS THE SEAT UP AND THE HATCH CLOSES NO PROBLEM.
So will a 33 fit in the center of the cargo area, laying down, seat up and locked on both sides, and hatch closes.

I just looked at my 31. It is touching the back of the rear seat, and there is around 2-1/2" to 3" of clearance to the closed tailgate. so a 33 will be close.
Better wait to see if someone has done this with a 33 before you drop the hammer.

Well tires wont be purchased for a month or 2 so its no rush. But when i buy them im getting 5. Im gonna need somewhere to put it to travel. Some say it fits, some say it doesnt. Others say it fits if the rear seat back isnt locked on both sides and just one is unlatched. If it wont fit then im buying a rack.

I carry a 34x12.5 Trxus M/T in the back of my XJ with the seat back up and the hatch still closes (it's very tight, but a 33" would be a bit nicer of a fit).

My 33 fit fine, not so much with my 35 and now 38. Wheel size and tire brand will make a difference. BFG, Maxxis and a few others measure about an inch smaller than what's on the sidewall.

Sorry, thought yours was a 97+.. not sure what difference there is between the newer and older style (if there is one). I can get the seat to latch on both sides, it's just a bit tight.

Done deal! It fits in the old model. Thanks guys! It laying down doesnt bother me. Ill bolts it down to the floor with brackets. Maybe Buy a mountaineer rack to go over it.The only thing back there is a small toolbox and spare parts. Maybe grocerys.
