It'll increase off road a lot right? Will it do better in mud too? That's mainly what I like to do. Instead of like hill climbs etc.

Yea the locker will be A LOT less work. The locker will increase your offroad ability and do much better in the mud.
If you converted the jeep to 4WD you'd need a new front axle, front drive shaft, and trance case

Put a locker in my 2wd and it helps a TON! Keepin up with all the 4x4's i go with and passin a few less lifted ones. Ive got the powertrax no-slip but Aussie lockers are good too and pretty cheap

First of all what rear axle do you have?*
Second if you're going to get a locker you really should do a right. In my opinion you should go with a full automatic locker like a Detroit locker, or a selectable locker like an Eaton electric locker.
Either way you're looking at a good seven to $800 which is a whole lot better than the $1,500 plus you would have been out for about 4x4 conversion

Amazingly they were added back to their sales page in a couple of weeks with no explanation as to how they were no suddenly OK. The first few failures were chalked up to poor isnstallation but as more broke, many professionally installed, and all due to pin failures and tooth cupping, the evidence mounted.
I bought mine new but second hand. A fellow KJ'er had put one it and it failed. He got a new replacement under warranty but installed a no slip isnted. I bought the brand new replacment Aussie and installed it. It failed exactly like the others. Because I was not the original purchaser Aussie told me to pee up a rope.
