$25 Closed to Open Cooling Upgrade
Hey guys,
I have been driving my 90XJ for a year now and been fighting the stupid closed bottle the whole time. My dad and I went to the local pull-a-part to find another radiator and overflow to do the traditional upgrade to an open cooling system.
While looking around we found a 1982 Mercedes and it had a cooling bottle with a metal neck and a radiator cap.
Since my radiator was new, just had no cap, we bought the following,
1 82 Mercedes bottle with cap $5.00 pull-a-part
1 90 Mitsubishi MightyMax overflow bottle $5.00 pull-a-part
4 "L" brackets $5.00 Napa
3 Rad. hose splices $10.00 Napa
and did this,
We took the old bottle out, removed the mounting plate, then hooked the old lines to the new tank, drilled 3 holes and it was mounted. We mounted the "L" brackets to the cover over the relays, and slide the overflow bottle down and it was mounted. Hooked up the overflow line and filled with antifreeze. Been running for 2 weeks now and temp hasn't gotten over 190, even hard driving.
The only issue is the overflow bottle leans a little toward the motor, but works great. We put a few zipties on it to make sure it would not come off and that is your $25 open cooling system upgrade. It is so cool to have a radiator cap and be able to see it work.

Another good option if you can't find pieces from a JY is to head to Napa and get their splice in T. Its what I did, and my total bill for all new parts was just over $30.
I used freedgr's write up from here.

That is a much better option for those who have a good radiator and its junk yard parts, totally awesome, mine was swapped out when the radiator went out but I'm showing this to my buddy.

Yea my radiator was only a year or so old. So this made much more sense to me.
Thanks,
