Default 2012 Four Wheel Drive

First time on the forums. I ran a fee searches but didn't see a thread where my specific question is addressed.

I am planning to purchase a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have my eye on two different ones and they are very similar. The big difference is one carries the Limited trim level while the other does not.

I actually prefer the non Limited version in every way but one. The Limited one has a radial dial control that allows finer tuning of the 4 wheel drive. There are settings for sport, snow, auto, sand/mud, and rock. Seems like a great option to have but I am wondering how necessary it is.

One of the main functions this Jeep will fill
is navigating a drive on beach we like to visit. So, I will definitely be driving on sand. It will also see northeast winters with snow.

So what exactly will the finer control get me? Would I have any issues driving on a sandy beach in the non Limited? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Welcome to the forum and possible jeep ownership. Google search is your friend and pulls up the information you want easily. Usually you can find those features on about a half dozen car review sites. Her is a cut and paste from edmunds about the 2012 GC four wheel systems...

"The 4-wheel-drive system available in the several variants of the Grand Cherokee depend on the actual trim selected. Quadra-Trac I comes standard in the 4WD-equipped Laredo and is essentially full-time all-wheel drive (AWD). The Limited, Overland and Overland Summit variations are delivered with standard Quadra-Trac II 4WD that boasts electronic hi-lo gear selection and auto-locking hubs. Additionally, when slippage is detected, traction is instantly diverted to the axle with the most grab. The Quadra-Trac II transfer case can be added to the Laredo with the optional X Package. As well, the Select Terrain system, with 5 dial-in terrain and surface settings can be added to the Quadra-Trac II 4WD variation for an unparalleled off-road experience. Meanwhile, each Overland and Overland Summit with the 5.7-liter V8 sports the standard Quadra Drive II 4WD system with standard limited-slip rear differential. With this part-time AWD setup, torque is automatically switched from the wheels that slip to the wheels that grip."

Default 2012 Four Wheel Drive

I really appreciate the response as well as the welcome. I guess what I was hoping for was to hear from other driver's experience. Are other drivers finding the full-time all wheel drive adequate? Specifically on sand terrain and snow. I was unsure as to if the standard Laredo equipment would suit my needs or if it's worth the extra for the Limited four wheel drive system. Thanks again.

I think the short answer is that the dial is window dressing. A 2012 is pretty nice and you won't be doing anything extreme. The regular full time awd in the GC is excellent and will serve you well on sand and snow. Most beach running is just flat sand, maybe a little soft stuff but nothing deep. I've driven and ridden around in GC's in the snow, 2011 Laredo and it was excellent. If you like the Laredo go for it.

As soon as I get a job and some money (and some self esteem) I'm going to dump the XJ and get a Grand Cherokee.
