Alright. Last video and my assessment of stock gearing and axles on 36" tsl's.

Grand Canyon trail. 2000 xj:

For my environment/terrain I do not want 4:56/4:88 gears. I was set on getting gears until today. Fact is I have plenty of power and better wheel speed for hills with stock gearing. It makes first gear very broad. Tranny worked flawlessly, never a heat or fade issue. I never installed the cooler or changed the oil. Ran out of time. Still want to. It's is horrid on the street. But my jeep is not transportation any longer.

Axles. 8.25. Fine. Lp dana 30? Scary but held up flawlessly. My plans are to install a hp 30, and cm shafts. Why? Because for my environment the small 30 and my shaved 8.25 was a real asset and allowed me to hang with the 40" tire guys in the deeper ruts. As long as I go no larger than 36" tires, I have no reason for larger axles.

Again this is my environment, my experience. Just sharing. And yes I had a ball today. Probably the most important thing.

nice. you've got finesse.

those rock bouncers have no place on our trails, all they do is beat the crap out of them with their high horsepower and wheel spin. they're not even fun to watch.

you showed them up to. thanks for representin with the xj.

Thanks caged. I have always liked a challenge. The grand Canyon trail in the video above. There was a group of Rubicons that were hung up on the trail to the right. Probably 6 or 7 jeeps. 3 of them were blocking the grand Canyon trail. So i asked if they could move their jeeps so I could take that trail. They quickly informed us that I could not make it. It was tore up and the last two guys that tried it had a heck of a time getting back out.

Now to me that sounds like fun? A challenge. If a trail is deemed "UN passable" then I want to take that trail. LOL.

Sometimes I don't make it. Sometimes I do.

I had very little trouble on that trail. Funny the Rubicon guys came around the other way and we're the ones taking in the background. LOLLOL

I never have the best rig, sometimes the worst. But i know in my head there is always a way through if you are willing to do what it takes. So my goal is to try the hardest obstacles there are and keep the old heep together.

On rock bouncers. They are cool. But they are too big in my opinion. This obstacle"excalibur" I failed in the video, also the bouncer. The ultra 4 and 2 others out of a hundred trucks made it. Bouncers are more for a show in my opinion. They are not efficient off road rigs.

Thanks. Although I really was just loving the challenge. Was not trying to best anyone.

There was at least 6 xj's there with long arms and looked to be set up decently. Never saw a one on the harder trails? It's only a 270 acre farm. I would have thought to see them on at least one of the tougher sections? The one climb out of the creek was only made by 4 trucks to my knowledge. One being my own. I don't know if the rain scared people or what?

I went up a few tough sections and there was not a track on them. Kind of weird, everyone was staying on the bunny trails. LOL

Over 900 views and very few comments after I posted my experience. LOL

I really did not expect the jeep to perform so well. Things are pretty amazing.

I am glad I did this little experiment. Saved me several hundred dollars in gearing I did not need. And I can still drive to the mall and show off my jeep if I want. LOL.

Now i need to find a hp 30. And figure how to improve my approach angle in the front. Need more. Also would like to shed 500 lbs of sprung weight. The lighter the better!

I'm assuming your rig has an Auto tranny?

My manual tranny and 3:07 gears could never swing 36" tires. I run 31's right now on the stock gearing and it's acceptable around town and on mild trails. However as soon as I hit the rocks I have a sting desire for deeper gears or a 4:1 T case or a doubler.

But the Sierras are a tremendously different envoirment than what I saw on the videos.

east coast wheeling is definitely different than west. nice driving. seems like for the stuff you do you don't really need gears

keep wheeling. I'll keep the warm and see if any stock parts start falling off that thing.

Thanks. That is why I stated "my environment. " I always suggest to others to re gear. Unless they would happen to fall into my own exact situation.

I did notice a power steering fluid leak. So i did something. LOL

Yea I think a clutch would definitely change things. Whole different ball game.

Funny I am admiring my jeep at home. How big it is now with the new to me 36's and beadlocks.

Get out there to that event and feel like the smallest truck out there. LOL

...and that smaller rig kept up with the big boyz...they really are amazing vehicles. Super capable without having to do much. A lot of what comes into play though, is driving. You did some good lines in your vids, and it seems you had some decent spotters as well.

This looks just like the two parks I have within driving distance to me. Exactly the same terrain. And my experience is similar. Me and my friend are usually the only 2 Jeeps on the hard trails other then bugies. I was informed many times about how my rig will not make it here and there. There was a guy once that told me specifically that I need longarms and 35s for a certain trail. Funny is that it was the first time I entered the trail downhill. All the previous times I did it going uphill. Lol.
