Default 2000 xj locked, blocked, and stock gearing on 36's.

LOL. So anyways I have a wheeling trip this Saturday I hope to make. Yes it will be trailered which I said I would never do. But 36's and stock gearing sucks on the rd. And I don't want to wear out my groove job on the tsl's.

So anyways this will be a test. First how stock gearing works off road in a more harsh environment with these larger tires(so far it's been great). Secondly how stock locked axles will hold up. Granted I have had these locked axles for almost two years with the blocks.lol. the spartan locker up front has been flawless and through two carriers! Am impresses about that for just a cheap locker.
My rear leaf set up is crap. Origional springs altered a bit. Adda leaf but removed a broken stock leaf And 1 1.5" degrees blocks. It works good and has held up two years. One full year as a daily driver.

Full coverage ins in case i roll it.

So i will do my best to post up video and pictures. Kind of excited about it. I realize this is nothing new. But maybe it will give people some real world ideas about what to do and what not to do.

Here is the old heep i will be taking out saturday.

your axles should be ok on strength. it's pretty tough to break them when your rig is gutless without the gears. add gears, then 36/37's become a problem.
try to get some video of your rig going up some ledges or undercuts. the struggle is real

Atmos I have some nice creek banks on my practice loop. Will try and video today.

Mr white I hope you are wrong. Don't really care if I burn it up, I will just rebuild it. Rather not, but nothing to worry about. I also hope to get a trans temp guage installed before saturday.

The tires are the bias 36 x 12.5 x15. They are like balloons. Really impressed so far with their ability to wrinkle around objects. Glad I have the beadlocks.

I have tried the LTBs and sx's. Very stiff tires Unlike the 36 bias.

How thick are the sidewalls on the 36s? I also have had the sx and I'm on ltbs now. I really like the ltbs.

Not sure if one wheeling trip will burn it up. I imagine it won't last as long though due to the load. If it was a manual your clutch would have been long gone by now.

Plan on being in 4 Low about all the time when on the trail and take extra fuel if you plan on wheeling all day long.

I have ran 31s, 32's, 33's, 35's, and now these 36's. All on the same gears, same axles. The 35's were just up a couple banks and through the creek. No real test.

Saturday should be a real test at this place. It's muddy and there are several trails I have not made yet. Sorry no big rock gardens. This is Ohio. Still a ton of fun!

Even on 31s I never am out of low. High range is just for desert or snowy roads.

Usually 3/4 of a tank lasts me at least 10 hrs of wheeling. But this time I am only going to run half a tank and have 10 gal at the trailer.

4ply sidewalls.

The transmission does not appear to be straining at all even with the larger tires in low range. But we will see. Sure hope I have time to install that trans temp guage.

yeah I keep it in 4 low the whole trip too. I anticipate you wanting gears or smaller tires after this.

I already want them(gears) But it's not going to keep me from having some fun.

I already love the larger tires just from the little bit I have had it off road. It swallows up some rough terrain compared to the 33 skinnies I was running.

Is all the wheeling in your area just like dirt, banks, and creeks?

Stock gears just couldnt do the rocks in the SE. Just too many undercuts and ledges that have to be bumped up with some wheelspeed. Trails are different than more rocks and boulders.

No we have about everything except that huge stuff the west has.

There is a climb I want to attempt at this place saturday. I have seen some big rigs with 40's fail. It's got multiple ledges. Problem is going to be the mud on them getting drug up. We have had a lot of rain. Last year this full tuber with 42's did a back flip off the top ledge. Pretty nasty! Everyone was fine. Made quite a show!

But where I am going Saturday it will be dirt for the most part. It's not any less difficult. And you still need power and wheel speed. Probably more.

kudos. I like seeing the limits of stock parts being pushed, regardless of vehicle.
