the only straight 6 diesel i know of from ford is the 7.8 they ran in like f-700s and bigger....at that point the xj is strickly cosmetic it would have to be a tube buggy to not just fall apart.. and it would wieght 8,000 lbs.

This ****s 2 funny a steering 2.5 rockwell only weighs about 100-150 lbs more than a front d60 in full dress d60-505-550 rockwell steering axle 640lbs...my hp-d60 in full dress is 560lbs under my xj and for 2 years it only had tube welded in to stiffen the unibody and the 60 has comfortably been hanging from a rusty's radius arm/crossmember ...my frame rails are now fully sleeved and i'll be adding a nice exocage b/c you can pancake the xj roof with a stock with just 1 flop ,and the fools with roof racks and roof mounted spares crush the best .

but, there are reasons you dont see hardly any rock crawlers running 2.5's. the weight is the biggest problem, not only the weight of the axles, but the added weight of the bracing youll need to support the axles so the unibody doesnt burst into tears, and the weight of the wheel tire combo you will need to run to work with that bolt pattern.
they have no place on an XJ, d60's and ford 9's are more than enough to handle whatever you can throw at an xj.
but, like i said...if you're building some rediculous mud truck, then sure go with 2.5's and giant tires with a big motor.
sure, it will be "different" than most XJ's. but, different is not always a good thing.

can i ask what kind of power and tires you run to warrant the need for 1ton axles?
hell my 8.8 only weighs 170
