1996 Country stuck in 4WD
Hey folks,
New to the XJ community. Bought a '96 Country back in August and I love it. I live in the mountains and we've gotten some snow and I've had to use 4WD a few times to get out of a parking lot or my driveway. Unfortunately, it gets stuck in part time. I've tried backing up after putting it into 2WD and no luck. Any ideas?
Thanks

if you're trying to shift it while at a stop, try when coasting instead (10-20mph without pressing the gas pedal) and play with the trans a little going from drive to neutral and back a couple of times.
if you're still stuck in part time try to do it in a straight line so you don't bind your wheels too much on dry pavement
last resort would be to adjust your tc linkage and lube everything up, search the forum there must be at least 1 thread about it.

happened to me a bunch of times, allot of times it was just luck, others I had to drive in reverse for like 1/4 mile... I have had to disconnect the front drive shaft for a few.... most probs with auto transmissions, never had a problem with my 5sp.

Here's how to shift it.
Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual. The suggestions in CAPS are mine.
"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I LET OFF THE GAS, THROW THE LEVER, TAP THE GAS AND LET OFF.
4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".
TO SHIFT OUT OF 4L, SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL WITH THE VEHICLE STOPPED, SHIFT THE TRANSFER CASE LEVER TO 2H, THEN THE TRANS TO D IF YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATIC, OR INTO FIRST GEAR WITH A MANUAL, AND CONTINUE ON.
