Exclamation 1978 cherokee s. help!!!

I found a 1978 cherokee s. 4-door. has the indian emblem on front fenders. Parden my lack of jeep knowledge. This will be my first jeep. It is from montana. Has 39,xxx actual miles. has no rust. kind of a bronze color. I will post pics when i get some. I went to dealer with vin#,of course they dont have any info, its more then 5 yrs old. I want to know the details of this rig. I know it has a 6cyl and a 3 speed manual. thats about it. wonder what this thing would be worth. trans and transfer were rebuilt in 02, has 150 miles since new clutch at same time. friends grandfather owned it. keep it original or build it up??? any input would be great. I dont know where to find the info on something like this. thx

One of my first vehicles was a 83 cherokee four door with the 258 and a four speed manual. They are great vehicles. It will never be fast with the 258 but it will handle any task you want it to do, mine did. The 78 should be equipped with 3.54:1 gears. You could step up to a 31" or 32" tire with a 3 or 4 inch lift. I would build it up myself but dont go excessive, good original full sizefour door cherokees are getting very hard to come by.

Check into The International Full Size Jeep Association where you will find more info than you need to know...

ive got an 80 widetrack 2-door with a 3" and 33" tires.

That's unfortunate because you could have been able to build/wheel his new cherokee with him.

Jeepjerry, that is a really nice cherokee, love the older models.

That is a beautiful Rig jeepjerry! I've ALWAYS wanted a Cherokee Chief, and almost bought one a few years back, but bought an IH Scout II instead. The Scout was awesome, but i'm kicking myself in the a%& for not buying the Chief, the Chief needed quite a bit more work though.

bonesdad, sounds like you scored. If it were mine, I wouldn't get too extreme with it, nothing that involves cutting. Maybe a mild lift and 33's like jeepjerry's.

Thanks, I always liked them too, and wasnt really looking for one but i found this one for sale and had to have it. Im very glad i got my hands on it. I was lucky to find it in the condition that its in.

I really like the scouts also, they make nice rigs and you dont see those much either. Those international v-8s like to burn oil, but you cant kill them!!

We need pics of this 78 cherokee....

Please don't ruin your Cherokee with big blingy wheels like Arnold did to his.

thanks for all the replies, guys! I'm working on the details of the purchase of the cherokee, as we speak. Sorry it has taken so long to get back here. I took some pics today with my phone. now I need to figure out how to get em on here. I think I will go with 3 inches and maybe 33s. Has brand new 31s now.
