So I have had my 87 cherokee for a good 4 years now and the odometer reads just over 200,000. and until recently i thought for an 87, 200k isnt bad. but me and my dad were talking and he thinks, based on its age and its really poor condition. it might have actually rolled over.
now the previous owner bought it used (not sure of mileage) and he lived in florida. not sure how long he had it. but living in florida he said he drove to utah at least once a year to four wheel with it. and that it has been in all of the 48 continental states.
based on this, do you guys think my 87 might actually have rolled over and be at 1.2million miles?! Just curious what some of you might think. (i do believe it is the original motor and trans but i am not positive on that.)

I think that it more than likely does not. That many miles on a gas engine is hard to belief... let alone with no major work... more than likely you have the claimed mileage.

Anythings possible, however it is unlikely. But here's one that makes it seem more likely. http://www.allpar.com/old/high-miles/richey.php

my dad has owned a mechanic shop for 23 years and has seen alot. everyone is right that it is doubtful. most 4.0's last 400k max which is still good. my dads delivery truck Toyota 22re has 540k on original drivetrain. a customer of his has an old caddy with 1.2million miles. currently on engine number 2 which has 405k. and another customer has a wrangler with a 4.0l and it has a whopping 640k. gone through 2 trannys though. So 1.2mil Is unlikely but they do go a long ways sometimes.

got a hold of the previous owner and talked to him. my 87 is on its second engine, which was also rebuilt later along with the tranny. and it actually has rolled over.
not sure how many miles each engine had on it before or after rebuild. but my 87 cherokee actually has 1.2million miles on it.
