So I have never welded in my short life. For someone who's lookin for something cheap but well worth the cash what should oIk look into and what kind of welding?

Get a mig. If I were you I would get the biggest you can afford. For most a 180 or 190 depending on maker. I personally will not buy anything but Hobart or Miller. I love my millermatic 180. You can find some good deals on used welders. Shop around everyone has their favorites so a lot of people will come in and say theirs love. But just get the best and biggest you can

Agreed. Don't skimp on the machine quality especially if u actually can afford something up a notch

Lincoln Electric makes fine machines also. Their bigger machines are solid. I use a combination of Miller and Lincoln at the fab shop where I work and there is basically no difference in quality. I also use Esaab but that's high dollar. I'll be getting a Miller Multimatic for personal use before long (tig, mig and stick). Choose your poison. But like others have said, get the biggest and best you can afford. And good luck.

It was just given to me last night. I can cut 7/8 steel with it. Just needs a new torch end. (Ordered yesterday for 300.00). Not sure of any other specs till I get it going next week.

Oh man...so jelly right now. Nice score! What are your plans for it? (besides the obvious cutting of steel, LOL) Any projects lined up yet?

If it has to be SMAW (stick) you should go with 3/32 or even 1/16 6013 rod. It takes a great deal of practice. There is not a high demand and it can be pretty expensive by the pound.

It will compliment my Aluminum MIG and ARC welders at my shop. I'm gonna be fabricating a lot of stuff for our equipment. Plus a few things here and there for the Jeep.

The welders are all Older Lincoln's. I'll grab some pics tomorrow. I'm good at using them and can dial them in, I'm just not good at explaining it. Yeah, I'm that old-school. Lol
