here is a link to the article about the brake cleaner and welding.

As for the spider gears a buddy did it on an explorer with the 8.8 and didn't get good penetration and broke the welds and made a mess of the ring and pinion with the shrapnel..... so I would definitely recommend the preheating and then lay it to it!

i welded my rear end in my 8.25 and it toasted my tires when i did it about a year ago they were new and now they are less then half i would say. and i only had about 5 thousand miles on it i would say. i think welding the rear is just fine if you know what you are doing but i would say i drive my new jeep with a full Detroit and it is nice to not be bouncing around the corner.

i would drive it as a dd but i only drive about ten miles a day and i did not drive it everyday maybe like twice a week me and my wife work and the same place so it would get drove when she did not want to wake up on time.

i would say if you drive the wj as your dd and not your xj your tires will be fine tell you can get you a 8.25 with a locker.

I have not seen any different in the tread life. With a welded diff you have to drive like you are pulling a trailer when on pavement. If something breaks then weld it, but really a lockright well be better on a DD. If it's a toy then weld it up!!!

I am not for sure. I am moving and going to be pulling my xj. I was going to just put it on a wheel dolly and put my back axle on it. ((((( I think it will not tow as straight, but should be ok behind a motor home. That is my opinion. If I am worng please let me know.)))))
