Default thinking about building a tire swing rear bumper... questions

I will be carrying a 33" tall tire, if I get bored in the future I might go 1 ton axles and 37"... maybe, but let's plan around that

what thickness should the wall be?

what hinge would work for this job?

I plan to tie in the the the stock bumper mounts and the hitch mounts, so it should be very stout, any other ideas?

Idk if this qualifies as fab, but I'll ignore that for now.

I think most folks use a spindal off a trailer, could probably get one at a farm and barn or (up here) Northern Tool.

Why not go .250 wall? Overkill is the way to go.

you know I am just messing with you, maybe I should just take a pic of a piece of metal and weld it to something, then it would be an ongoing project

as a matter of fact yes sir it did

but I am thinking 3/16 for the main body of the bumper as it would but I guess that is only a 5-7% weight difference, but it adds up

My front bumper and most are made using 3/16" plate for the shell and 1/4" plate for the main structure that attaches to the frame. Same for rear bumpers.

Heres how mine turned out,

thinking about building a tire swing rear bumper... questions-dscn1087online.jpg

If you plan on mounting to the factory bolt holes, your going to have to cut a hole in that factory face plate so you can slide steel into the frame. if you make your own bumper and just bolt it on, it will flex like crazy under a load! I initially was just going to bolt it up but then had to weld on tubing to the plates extending 16" into the frame.

I used 1/4" steel for the 2x4 tubing and plate for the mounts, 3/16" for the main tube stretching width wise, and I think 1/4" for the tire mount. For the hinge, I got pipe with a 3/4" wall thickness and a inside bore of 3/4". I then have 3/8" steel tabs on either side of the pipe and welded the tabs to the main tube of the bumper. One side i made it a removable pin and the other side has a 3/4" shaft going through the tabs and pipe with thick washers welded to the shaft on either side creating a hinge.

Just rebuilt mine to hold a 35" tire. The bumper and swing are made of 1/8" inch which is ok but would rather have 1/4 for bumper and 3/16 for my 2x2 swing. I bought the swing kit from AtoZfabrication and it made things so easy. Beefy hinge, t handle latch, and mounting bolt plate.
