Here is a drawing of the new idea. I think it provides adequate triangulation. The center will be 3"x2"x1/8". The two sides will be 2"x2"x1/8". Do you guys think that is good enough, or should I use 3/16"?

well with it falling down i dont think thats a big deal cause your gonna have the hatch up anyway... so it would just fall a short distance to it... and then probly compress that down also BUT slow enough for you to move or no whats going on... as for leverage on the last drawing above in red... you could run a pulley at the middle hinge and use a walmart 4wheeler winch to pull it up from the front of the roof rack... and just mount a switch in the dash for it... also for leverage youll need to connect the other end to something as far out as possible like maybe something that sticks out from the middle of the wheel or something... and can be disconnected for wheel removal... think of like a post hole drill for a tractor... and how the leverage is for the tractor to pick it up and down... make sence? the cable would run on the pulley until it gets high enough for the winch to pull it by itself... maybe i can draw something up too... lol

Voila!!!
a winch and some pullys and your good!!!
might have some weak pts where the cables mount though...
hahah
(its a cool idea though and it would look great if you could pull it off (w/o the winch haha))

Look at two 150lb gas struts from McMaster Carr. Dont go too heavy on the steel. Keep in mind the upper mounting points just need to locate it, figure on the weight of the tire and "swingup" resting on bumper to secure while in motion.
You may have a transition where your lifting quite some weight till the struts take effect. For reference this is with my 125lb tent and an aluminum lid on this trailer.

All right great idea here if you have a winch in the front run a pulley off the front roof rack and one off the back and have it hooked up to your tire carrier, that way you only need one winch.
Ok maybe a bad idea, but it might work

then you would have a winch cable down your windshield all the time... would look real funny i think... lol... plus if you needed it you would have to try and get the "larger" cable off without scratching up the rig and breaking any glass... walmart winches are like nothing... that joker can just stay up there... lol
