My camera is terrible but I put these down for Mr no name with the mean e mails. Truly I could care less what he thinks but it kinda did irk me a hair. The truth is with some consistent practice with quality equipment anyone can do this.
Im sorry about the poor pics.

all welds done in standard mig mode non pulse. Same setting just different whip and timing. pre and post flow with 3 part gas.

I am currently without an XJ so i put my sticker on the next best thing!

MIG and I used my older Hobart Handler 120 with CO2, I was doing all my tube doors with the Lincoln square wave TIG 175 and they were coming out great they were just taking me to much time. So I broke out the baby MIG. Why do you ask?
Oh and what did you say that the email dude was so mad about?

Nice Beads. Wish I was able to get out to the garage... I could run some test plates in different positions using my tombstone. I thought the point of this post was to post up what us home fabbers are doing... not give a welding clinic
(reason I can't go out to the garage and do anything is I have a broken left foot, and a broken right tibial plataeu. The right leg is nonweight bearing, and will be that way till Jan6.)

Please don't think that. Those pics are only a response to 2 nasty emails I got from a jerk that thinks we shouldn't be doing this. I'm not not a show off by any means I try to be as humble as possible. But mister anonymous needed to be corrected and ya'll defended.

I would have called the email writers out in open, and asked to see thier welds.

I know you did the test plates to shut their mouths, i just wish I could do some test plates to show what the SMAW guys can do
BTW I havent done any plates like that since taking the state test to get certified.

Sorry Andy ... I meant to sign that email so you knew it was me.

There is always someone that knows more or different .... but it's a matter of how well you present yourself. Unfortunately ... the same should apply for the folks that feel they must test your knowledge or skills.
Wouldn't be the first time it's happened to me either.

Nice welds too. I'm having a little trouble figuring out the bottom plate (the 2nd picture). I can determine what looks to be a push weld and a pull weld -- but can't make out the last one. What gas are you using on those welds? 75/25 or 90/10 ?

Don't knock yourself COS. I have seen much crappier looking welds from certified welders in my past. I would be tickled to call those my welds.
Thanks Blue!! I really like the "snake bellies" that ironmanandy laid down, those are freakin sexy!! A lot of my success depends on position, if it is a tough spot, the look of my welds suffer!! I just flat don't have enough experience in tough welding positions yet!!

Hey Ironman Those welds are nice I hope to one day be able to weld like that. I also wish I had a bigger MIG like that millermatic! My little Hobart does alot better than most people give it credit for though, I have gotten strong welds with great penetration on 3/16" an 1/8" steel when I started using CO2 instead of the C25.
I still do not understand what you did to make this anonymous e mailer so upset??

All I have for a camera is my phone so the pix are terrible to say the least. The first is a timing cover I tigged rather then buying one of those crappy re pop units that always leak. 2nd is of the nuts welded in side my bumper mounts, and the 3rd is of my radiator support and clevis mount. The pix are bad like I said, Im working om buying a good camera so I can post better pix. All welds were done in my garage with a miller 251. Im a little jealous of your 350P, that's the one I wanted but I only have single phase in my garage.

Rock, thats a purdy tig weld man, BTW all my equip is single phase. the 350p is available in both. you just flip a plate under the cover.
coxjfan, Id be proud of those the are steady and consistent. nothing shameful there.
Joe, the gas I use is a argon, Co2, O2 mix and I don't know the mix amount they wont tell me. It works really well though.
The bottom weld I suppose you could call a push, Honestly a crazy whip makes a weaker weld, the heat needs to be centralized and consistent. that bottom weld is far stronger than the two pretty ones. That was a hard lesson for me to learn. I wanted everything to look all race car when in reality it needed to be post apocalyptic if you catch my drift. If any of yall live near me (Hayesville NC) Id be happy to let you weld on some stuff with the machine. A 40 lb roll of wire is only 30.00 and the gas is like 20.00 to fill. I go through 1 a month. of each. It gets lonely down in my little cave of a building. heh!
enough whining I'm going to bed. my customers are whining for their parts and morning comes early.

Thanks for the compliment!! I wish I lived close by, I'd love to check out your equipment!! That kind of stuff makes me giddy!! LOL!! CO is a LONG way from NC though!! LOL!! I agree with you on function over form, but I like my welds to look nice, and be strong like bull!! It is a balancing act, to say the least!!
Thanx, nice to hear. When I bought the 350 was only available in 2 phase, they changed that about a year after I got my 251. I'll try and get some pix of the welds on my bumper, its painted but I left some of them exposed for a reason. A lot of people seem to think that just because I build my own stuff it will fall apart. They don't realize I own a 4x4 shop and do this kind of thing all the time. I have been welding sense I was 8, that's 11 years experience.
, that makes me feel old hahahahahahaha!
