Recessed CB Mount
Here is my take on a CB mount for my ’99…
First I removed the center console to access the situation. I found a nice sturdy dash support bracket there, which made the perfect foundation for a CB mount:
Once I did some test fitting and calibrated eyeballing, I bent up a little bracket out of some 1” wide 12-gauge sheetmetal. Drilled a couple holes, and mounted it to the dash support bracket:
I had to put a little twist in it to make the CB hang vertically and not at an angle like the dash support bracket:
Then I mounted my bracket with some ¼-20 hardware:
With that done, I hung the CB on my bracket:
Next it was time to carve up the center console to make room for the CB:
And finally, the semi-finished installation:
There is still plenty of leg room; I’m 6’-1” tall and don’t have any interference even when sliding into the seat or laying my leg as far sideways as comfortable for extended driving:
And yes, I need to address my transfer case shifter handle as it does just barely kiss the control ***** on the CB when in the 2wd position. But that is a project for next weekend…

Honestly don't remember? I was in the yard for a couple of hours looking for a handful of things for various projects, and ended up pulling off about a dozen shift ***** just to ensure I had something that would work without having to make multiple trips... Paid $5 for the lot of them... I am pretty sure it was an import SUV of some sort, maybe a Pathfinder or something along those lines?

You are correct - the rubber handle is not meant to be removed. I used a utility knife to cut the rubber handle off the shifter stalk, and then used a skinny wheel on a grinder to cut the stalk off right at the bend. The new **** I found was a perfect press-fit onto the stalk.

I like the idea but I'm skeptical as to how long the CB will hold up with it only being mounted on one side. The mounts aren't designed to hold the weight of the radio cantelevered on one mounting bolt. Might hold fine while stationary, but once you start hitting bumps it's going to try and break itself off. Is there a way to creat a simlar bracket and attach it to the kick panel under the steering column?
