The stock rear bumper is only held on by 8 bolts into thin guage sheet metal with a bolt on the backside. Do you have a hitch?

For recovery and a rear bumper in general pipe is fine because it's not really structural, you're not landing on it, and you're not using it to crawl over things. From a recovery standpoint or standing up to impact it's fine and definitely better than a stock bumper. If he gets rear ended it won't hold up like HREW or DOM will though.

The problem with using pipe comes in when you're using it for a stinger, sliders, cages, ect. Pipe is hardened and much easier to crush than tube is. It'll hold up ok, but if it's something that's coming down on rocks or getting hit often it's significantly weaker and much more prone to failure.

Not all pipe is hardened, your standard sch 80 isnt if I recall, if he used harder pipe he couldn't have been able to bend it like he did. It would collapse or crush in the dies.
