bought this 2000 jeep xj off a friend who’s been very transparent with me as he isn’t a car guy. have been dealing with some mechanical issues that i got sorted out and decided to take the car to a mechanic to check out the under body thoroughly to which we discovered that this clean 87k mile jeep is just a rust box that was painted over terribly.
im looking for either opinions on whether or not i should just part this baby out (the engine is great and the interior is the cleanest i’ve seen in an xj personally) or try to repair this stuff myself
i would also be open to hiring someone with experience that would be down to take on such a job if that is the case.
really fell in love with this car after caring for it for a couple weeks.
i didnt notice anything too bad on those parts, these were the worst of the bunch.
i've gotten some offers already so im going to try to sell it as is listed with rust under body. interior and engine are great. maybe i might even break even.
i will see profit from parting out but will take too much time and space.
It's hard to find a XJ that is not rusred. Unless you find one from the south or the West. And at that you're paying about 4,000 for it. Keep it learn how to weld use it as a training tool. I have a 95 and a 96 and 96 has a few spots on the frame rail unibody that is rusted throu and my 95 is missing complete section of the unit frame rail. I'm using the 95 as a welding tool to learn and practice on. Also go to your local auto salvage and cut frame sections off a XJ and just weld it in place onto yours. Or if that's just too much work then sell it for profit and don't buy a xj again because they all majority of them have rust
If you are going to get another XJ you have a 4x4 now , you can get a 2x4 XJ and make it 4X4 , 2 wheel drive XJ's are cheaper and most of the time in better shape .
The track bar frame mount has a hole in it, the thing that keeps the front axle center under the vehicle.
I don't know how liability works in your state but there may be risk in selling it. Any chance of your "friend" giving you your money back?
