Dirty black XJ from Middle Earth (New Zealand)
Hi Guys,
This is my second post. Please bear with me and give me tips about how to correctly use the forum if I make a mistake, cheers.
This is my first jeep which I bought under a week ago for 600NZD (around 450USD). I was so stoked to finally own one. Sure she is a bit rough and needs some quality time and effort to get her up to standard but I think its well worth it. This one came form Japan, and has had some fiddling done with it like an aftermarket alarm with some bojang relays put in.

So as you can see, its not perfect. We brough it home on the trailer and set to work trying to get it going properly. PO said the alternator was stuffed, but after replacing the alternator fuse, I proved him wrong. Off for a test drive, but it had been left in 4wd whoops. Silly me didnt check first. Anyway made some funny noises and didnt like reversing. Then I heard a loud clunk and proceeded to see trans fluid dripping out of the bellhousing. So I pulled the transmission. I will give it a clean and new filter fluid etc. Also inspect transfer case and put it al back in. Should be easy.
On another note, has anyone seen this sort of thing before? My best guess is its an exhaust temp dummy light for Japan OE market. Idk what the deal is with welding it to the exhasut though...

So the drivers seat had what looked like a lean to it. Turns out the base is nice and broke. A big boy must have been sitting on it. Also decided to take a further look at rust showing through on underside, well this wasn't what I wanted...
well that was unexpected

Also anyone know what this 3 plug wire on the drivers side is for? not sure if it was connected or not.
colours are white grey trace, black orang or red, and black grey.
So looks like a new floor pan, yay!

So I pulled up the carpet completely. Stoked that the left hand side is barely touched. The carpet was soaking, there was literally a puddle in the left side, the right side didnt because it had rust hole to escape through. I guess thats what happens when you leave a jeep sitting under a tree with a hole in the roof for 2 years. Ugh.

My problem now is that because I live in New Zealand and am on a budget, $250NZD for a full length panel shipped here is a bit steep. I can either try and patch it, heh. Or cut one out of another truck here. The only problem with that is that I will need a rechargeable saw or grinder. What do you guys think?

Its been a while since I have posted, been busy with lots of excuses.
So a while back, I went up to a junkyard to cut out a floor pan from a donor xj. Some of the ones at the junkyard looked better overall than mine.
I managed to use a grinder to get most of it, the rest was done by a sabre saw that the junkyard owner kindly helped me with.
I would have liked to have got a new replacement panel but due to being in New Zealand, that is cost prohibitive. And over here vehicle testing laws dictate that panels have to be welded by a certified person.
So my idea is to make it difficult to even tell that the floor has been replaced. Sounds easy right? Well hopefully.
Heres some pics:

I should add that I had a time-limit of like 2 hours to get the panel out so that's why I decided to cut through the unibody rails and take the whole lot. Not bad for $80 NZD. I didn't even have to do all the work.
The next challenge will be nicely removing the old floorpan without cutting too far into the unibody and other panels.

Engine: freshened up swapped in 87 4.0
Looks like a fun project. If I can say anything about such a large project, having a donor vehicle of a similar year helps so much. If you haul it out of the junkyard, steal parts then return it there, it's way easier than having to find new parts or keep going back for them.
