Dude I am in almost the same boat.. wife and a kid at home.... I have been in the automotive thing for almost 2 decades and into hardcore wheeling for almost 10 yrs.. so I know where you are coming from. Just trying to pass on some of my experience.
My rigs might look like I got money... but I do creative trading and buying. I only spend money on things I cant source used.. or the used price is too close to the new price.
I still have my first welding machine... I own a total of 4 of them now.. but Only use my Hobart. I would sell my other 3, but even though they are in like new condition I cant recover even half of what I paid for them so I shall keep them in case another creative deal comes along.
As for buying a bender.. the reason why I have all the dies and stuff is.. I will trade work for tools and parts. If you are only going to do the lower cage the Harbor frieght kinker might work for you especially if you use pipe and not tubing.

I have the Protools 105 hd bender and love it, made my own degree wheel, stand, and lever to save money but it works great and comes with bendtech which is a wonderful tool to help cut down on material waste. Just about finished up my rear fenders with it. Need to make them pretty

Nice job, if you want to save space I mounted my jd32 so it bends vertical instead of horizontal. Its on a frame that has wheels to make it portable. I also picked up an air over hydraulic cylinder from HF for $90 to do the work for me, works great.

look around you can find them much cheaper, i just got a jd2 from my local steel yard for $190 plus dies. buy some material to build a stand, and if you dont know how to weld the bender stand is a great place to start.
a good bender is worth every penny and imo bending tube and making a clean fit is much harder than making a great weld
