Not sure where you are at, but dom us about 4 dollars a foot. Most cages take less then 100'. So for less then 200 bucks you would use weaker material.
Also OP said he had never worked with metal or welded, do this isn't even a topic that should be discussed...

DOM 1 3/4x .120 goes for 5.50/ft here. but yea, still for an interior cage that does not take much tubing i would go for DOM

A couple of the local fab shops just bought 1000' for 3.25 a foot.. I didnt need any so I didnt join in the purchase this time. Obviously the more you buy the cheaper it is.. and if you use the same sales rep the cheaper the prices get.
I am also located in VA by a lot of fabrication shops and there are a couple of steel mills within 4 hrs of my location.. not sure if that plays into the price of steel.
IN my Humble opinion I would not cheap out on safety to save a few bucks. Also welding cages in a whole lot more then just metling metal. A lot goes into design, and having the right equipment goes a long way. You are going to need more then a welder and a tube bender to pull off a cage for jeepspeed.
I'm starting a cage build right now and had to weight HREW vs DOM. Cherokee's are typically more of a budget 4x4 so I can see the appeal of using the less expensive hrew. DOM has a tensile strength of approx 70,000 psi where as HREW is in the 40,000 psi range. DOM is 75% stronger. It has slightly more carbon and the fact that it's work hardened make it much better for a roll cage. HREW is not much stronger than sch 40 pipe which is in the 30,000 psi range.
It is absolutely worth the extra money for DOM.

I didn't realize how much stronger dom was till I read soul all that.
