Hey I found this at the junk yard today...(pic1) I want to some how make it like this...(pic 4) what do I do? Any suggestions and how to???

if you plan on making it a cold air intake you'd better put a heat shield between the filter and the engine. the exhaust manifold is on that side and it throws off alot of heat. check out the cheap mods thread in the fab section somebody there has a nice cold air homebrew setup.

Check out my album. I have a home made CAI. I used 3'' pipe from Murrys, one end is expanded to 3 1/16 0r 1/8 fits perfict into stock flex tube. I picked up a filter from www.frozenboost.com.

If you want to get the most out of your CAI, you need to isolate the filter from hot air coming from the engine. So, you need to fab a shield between the motor & your filter. The goal is to totally isolate the filter so that it only receives "outside" air. Simply hangin a cone filter on the end of tube has mistakenly become known as a CAI but really isn't.
You can use the parts you found at the bone yard.. just make sure you do some fab work to isolate that filter.

the way that filter element looks scares the heck out me. i'd wash it and check for damages, because you may need to buy a new filter for it. the intake pipe itself seems pretty solid. and like others have said, isolating the filter from the exhaust radiant heat is key. you could always modify the stock air box and have the filter and intake pipe go into that, or do like what SWCcustom did and make your own heat shield. if you know of anybody with a washing machine or something sitting out on the curb for trash pick-up, you cut a side off and use it to bend and shape into a functioning heat shield.

that or just use a sheet of 18 GA i made my CIA for around 51.63 from autozone!!

Ill have to say i like your heat shield SWC custom i havent got around to making one like that yet. Did you block off the holes from the stock airbox also?

yeah i did when i cut out the pice i made a leg on it to cover the holes, then my dad helped me bend it, (we were able to bend it up on him break for doing flashing/ house trim) and drilled a hole and put one stock bolt back in and used a few self tapping screws, made lil tabs to put against rad support and fender. ohh and i cut out the lil square pice of plastic behind my drivers head light with a dremel with a bit (used it like a roto zip)..

you got any problems with your filter getting wet whn mudding or driving through these snowy conditions? thats the only thing im worried about is S*** gettin sucked up into my engine

nahh not when i just run it to the stor and back till i get it all fixed, but we had it on the lake the other day and it was fine, i havent heard anything bad bout them, we run CIAs on everything (first homebrew one) but we have it on our mustang KNN, old f-350 with 475 at the motor airaid, never had a hickup with any of them!!!

not a big problem unless you plan on driving through a river. were the filter is located, not much comes into that section of the engine from regular road splash. you're pretty well protected unless you decide to cut a big hole in the wheel well since the filter sits right above that.

what about in the inner fender pannel like on the dodge 1500's they suck utta the fender, cout u cut a hole there to get more air flow?

lol, i wouldn't say it creates more flow, as more it introduces cooler, ambient air from outside the engine compartment.
