Default Hook hitch

Got bored at work and made this. Got the hook of a pumping unit(that's what I do at work assemble them for the new wells) and got some square tubing welded it all together and drilled the for the pin.

The hook is rated for 5000 lbs. And the rest of the hook is welded the square tubing. And the 5/8s pen goes there the hook it self everything. So it should strong

your jeep weighs about 5000 lbs. put some pulling force on top of that, its coming off. maybe not right away, but it will.

i like the idea, but i like my friends too much to send a hooked projectile towards them while extrcting my jeep!!

Curb weight for a stock XJ is about 3500lbs. A full size V8 PU with a real frame under it is about 5000lbs. On most light/med duty tow trucks the hooks and chains are rated somewhere between 4000 - 6000 lbs WLL. Not debating if that hook and weld job is strong enough for the job. That would depend on the job. Personally I would'nt use anything that was butt welded for recovery and overkill is not bad sometimes!

If you looked at What I do with a tow truck it's 2 hooks/chains all the time!!

When it comes to recovery, u should be using something thats, at least 3x more then what the weight of the vehical is. Theres alot more factors that need to be taken into effect, if a vehical that weighs 3000lbs, u think a 4500lbs tow strap would be able to pull the vehical no problem, and yea it would if the car is just lightly stuck in the snow or something but not for a fully equipped rig with like 35" stuck in mud. A 8k winch is the minimum u should go with, and most tow hooks, atleast the ones that came with my tow hook brackets are rated for 10,000lbs each.

That hook is not butt welded to it. It has the shaft of the hook that goes into the tubing. And the hole for the pin is drilled through everything. So nothing coming off

yeah curb weight....add big tires, wheels, bumpers, tire carrier and sliders, that xj now weighs closer to 5000 lbs....then another vehicle at the other end that weighs the same or more(and one of you would be stuck adding even more force).....way more than 5000 lbs of force, but whatever....its not me, my jeep, or friends. just lookin out for fellow jeepers.

It's not like I'm hanging my jeep from the damn thing. And I live in the dessert so not much mud to get stuck in. The only thing that matter is if I feel comfortable using it. And who ever I pull out.

I think you had some good ingenuity. As always recover safely, any equipment can fail at any given time so be prepared for the worse and you wont be surprised.

That's all I would want is a safe recovery. But these guy and taken every little thing to the most.

Iv'e seen many people do much dumber things than use that hook to pull some one out. You knock it till you need that guy to pull you out of a ditch.

Getting a running start and yanking on a cable that's hooked to the axle. Even kids know that's a bad combo. But the hook on the cable didn't give way..... the axle did:icon_cheesyg rin:
