Heres my solution to the lack of cup holders in older XJ's.
Just a standard water bottle holder for a bike. All switches are usable with no interference. And it beats the plastic one u buy from the dealer. That i'm assuming would break if it was bumped at anything below freezing. Hey and it doesn't look to bad when its holding a drink and its +100F out

I think i know what you mean, they are like a plastic cardboard. Kind of a corrugated type deal.
