One benefit of it would be getting rid of control arms, but then you are designing something from scratch basically. If you are upgrading to a bigger axle and you don't want to narrow it down then it is a good way to go.

Many have done it... I've thought about it myself. Not a bad way to go.

There is something about the steering if I remember correctly. I think it was with our rigs, with the tires in a bind its easier for the steering to move the body and not the tires. or something like that..

i have been working on my leaf spring swap for a month or so now and it isnt really as difficult as you would think. just take your time and research.

the steering issue. yes you are correct. a solution to the wierd steering behavior is running a trac bar or going with hydrolic assist steering ($200). i am going to see how bad this really is then decide if i want to go hydro assist or not.

if you have any questions post them up on my build thread which was posted earlier and i will try to give as much info as i can on my experience.
