Default Cutting Fender and buying/making new flare

Hey, I have been off roading lately and see that my 31" tires are hitting the stock fender flare and is tearing it up on the inside. I am already going to lift it up all around to 4.5" (the front sits at 3" and the back is at 1.5" to my supprise!) I have seen the Bushwacker cut out fender flare, but that is around $400 or more. If thats what I have to do to get more clearance for my wheels to move around thats fine, but Id like to find a cheaper way. Has anyone built/modified fender flare to accomplish this?? Ive heard of using garden edging? cutting the stock flare? Pics would be nice. thanks!
