the better cold air intake

Default the better cold air intake

Alright so everyone sticks a cone filter in their stock air box and calls it good that is nothing more than a cone filter in the stock air box.... That is nowhere near a cold air intake!

and since kits are about $300 of money that i dont have I made my own true cold air intake (well coldest you are going to get without going ram air)

this is only the mock up! i have real nuts and bolts to put it together as well a roll of heat wrap

First i started by cutting out the front of the box



i cut the biggest opening that i could with the radiator hose there

then i made templates with it in the jeep and cut them out of 22ga steel



then i mocked it up and added L brackets



then i assembled it



and added it to the air box





then i mocked it up in the vehicle



and realized i need to cut out some metal



then i reassembled

this is only the mock up! i have real nuts and bolts to put it together as well a roll of heat wrap


Tomorrow i am going to take the entire thing out and heat wrap the sucker to keep as much heat out as i can.


but it is sealed off from the engine bay really well and it works great! (i had it in ABS plastic before and decided to switch to metal)

mope this sparks up some ideas

Not really much different than what others have done.

Kinda rough looking, maybe some of that will get covered by heat tape.

again its in mock up.

but i still use the rectangle filter as it has nearly the same surface area as a cone filter.

So the entire system is sealed away from the engine bay. It does not draw any air from the engine bay (well wont once it is wrapped)

btw i had this in ABS plastic before and it did help in the MPG department. a little seat of the pants improvement. but in combination with the other engine modifications that i have it helps.

COLD air intakes don't so much make the engine intake air temps be cold as much as they do improve air flow. the temp might change 10-30 degrees but that is not enough to make a difference in just about anything. but the fact that a cone filter can flow air way way better and getting rid of the curves and resonators and sound deadening material that can often come in stock intake systems is how you get a LITTLE LITTLE LITTLE bit more performance.
but like you said....when added to an exhaust kit...that is when you will see differences...better intake flow is nothing without better exit flow.

this is the intake i made for my 07 dodge ram a while back. metal heat shield painted and everything by had. pop riveted.


it works and is still working great 3 years later

it is to compliment a 62mm bored throttle body (bored myself on a metal lath and smoothed)
Ev6 style injectors (bought new)
12mm spark plug wires (bought new)
MSD ignition ($50 craigslist)
MSD coil ($30 craigslist)
full 2.5" high flow mandrel bent exhaust ($40 magna flow high flow cat 2.5" , $30 2.5" cherry bomb, free 2.5" pipe and free use of mandrel bender)


I am all about keeping things low cost




i want to take my dremel and take the ribs out of the air box and take some exhaust pipe and make an intake tube from the box as well

Thanks i still need to finish it.... but between some late nights, adult beverages and working this weekend its been a little hard to button everything up.... Monday i have a day off (wow tomorrow!) so i will most likely get some more work done after i do some major garage cleaning

and we might be able to work a bored throttle body out I have no idea when i would be at the shop next. And since you use yours as a DD you would either have to suffer it being down for a day or grab a core from the JY near the I-10/202 ($10 if you strip EVERYTHING off of it and just have the core)

Hey if you want some help, im off as well. As for the TB let me know when you'd be able to get to the shop. I can live with the eep being dead for a day haha
