My buddy wanted a roof rack and wanted to spend very little money...so.
We started with 2 yard gates about 5'8" x 4'3".

Then we drilled 14 holes in each frame for the supports.

I took some aluminum conduit and cut 14 of them them into 3 1/4" sections and my buddy rounded each end with a bench grinder to fit around the frame neatly.

We used 5/16" nuts and bolts to bolt it all together. We added 2 extra roof rack bars (one for KC lights and the other for the roof rack) and drilled holes into both sides of the roof rack bars to bolt it down.

Then I cut a pice of 2"x1/8" steel long enought to go from front to back underniethof everything. The plan is to take that back out and put 2 in instead of 1 in the middle.

And here is the final product (on the left). Besides the way we did the bottom support it looks like it came right out of a box. After we fix the bottom support it will get painted black.

No bottom just support bars. We dont want any howling noise from the wind.
Yes that is a very stout bumper, I love over kill.

I had the conduit at my house already, I think he said he gave $50 for the fence doors. around $5 for the nuts and bolts. So that paticular project cost less that $60.
