Default $30 roof rack

Found this beauty on Craigslist and talked the guy down to 30 bucks
Here are some of the photos when i brought it home, I plan on cleaning it up a bit and most likely coating it with bed liner. I'm going to mount it to my stock rails with U-bolts, I hear that can be a pain in the butt so if anyone has any tips that would be greatly appreciated.

I drilled a hole throught the roof rack and the stock rack thing and bolted it down. I unfortunatly have no gooda advice on the U bolts. Are you gonna put something down as to not allow stuff to fall through onto your roof? Post some pics of the final product! I'd have got it for 30$ haha nice find

Well I figured out my mounting problem. The vertical bar that runs the base of the basket prevents the basket from sitting flat on the stock rails. So i flipped it over and it sat perfectly.

So now I think i will have to cut out the bars on the bottom, then add my own type of support for the bottom.

Any good ideas to add a bottom to it without welding?

I'm just now planning how to mount my roof rack (it's unfinished). Which stock rack do you have? I have a 93 XJ with the steel rails. They have a slight arch, but flatten with some weight on them. I'm planning on using the muffler U clamps and I'm pretty sure the rack will sit flat on top when clamped down. Do your rails not have any give to them?

Sweet Deal!!

My suggestion: Go to the junk yard and pick up 4 more of the inserts that are used on the factory cross bars. Install 2 each in your rails. Make 4 C or Z shaped brackets to connect your rack to the rails. Bolt the brackets to the rails (probably metric) and to the roof rack 1/4" or 6mm (nylon lock nuts prefered). I have put 200 lbs on lumber on mine with no wiggle or wobble.

Yeah there isn't much bend in my rails. definitely not enough to get them flat.

The past few days I have been cleaning it up and getting it ready to paint, I now have all the masking tape that was stuck on off.

Next I am grinding off all the rust on the metal and getting down to a nice shinny silver!!

The next step after it has been all stripped off is to remove the vertical and cross bars on the bottom and add a heavy duty wire floor and add wire in between the gaps on the side walls.

Then I will either add some rust proof paint or coat it in bed liner, not exactly sure yet.

This is a photo with a coat of just normal black spray paint to see how the color looks
