I've done these belts and yes they suck. No easy way around them.

Doesn't sound like an EGR issues to me but I guess it could be. My first thought would be the MAFS (if its not a MAP system) or IACV. Verify that and also take a look to see if anything on the intake is unhooked. Did you put a light on it? You sure the timing is right? I've been "right" about a lot I things before, lol.

I'd check every single nook and cranny of the intake. I've seen where I've jacked motors that high and pulled or broke vacuum lines wires to pulling on a sensor and breakingthe internals but no visible damage.

I have worked on alot of PT cruisers from Calipers,Steering Rack,Motor mounts,Coil's etc...I hate them.

I will say the PT cruiser has the Easiest R&P to change i have seen on a car that the Engine is jammed in like that.

At least with a belt, it's sealed separate from the engine oil so that part is nice. I changed the timing belt on my wife's Miata and it was a breeze compared to the Altima. Then again, that's a RWD car; which makes sense.

transverse mount engines assemblies are dumb...
Oh, I know timing chains wear out as well - but I'd rather do the job every 300-500Kmiles, instead of every 50-60Kmiles, believe me!

Besides, a chain can be "broken and threaded" for rollers if you have the tools and are desperate, while you can't do that with a belt, and you're stuck with an engine mount in the middle of the damned loop (on transverse-mount engines.)

If FWD is so bloody good, why isn't it used on vehicles where it matters - like cop cars? FWD isn't better - it's just cheaper to build.
