93 Mustang with the AOD automatic. Backed into my parking spot at home after work, went to shift out of Reverse into Park, and i got nothing. Had to shut it off with the transmission still in reverse. The shifter itself still works as it should, so either the linkage bushing underneath the vehicle broke, or worse, the pin. But i have no idea because i cant get to it. I park in the dirt, and the vehicle is too low to get a jack under there. The factory scissor jack wont even fit.

I am at a loss here, but i have to get under it to get to that linkage. How?

 

Got it.

Instead of going at it from the bottom, i pulled the console, and then the shifter assembly. This gave me all the access i needed. Found the issue immediately. The cable popped off the shifter arm ball stud. There is/was a metal clip that fits over the cable that the ball stud snaps into. The clip failed, letting the cable fall off. Rather than source a replacement, my uncle and i thought it best to replace the ball stud with a nut and bolt, like the older models used. Ground the backside of the stud and punched the rest out. Found a shouldered bolt that fit with some minor filing. Not too tight and not too loose. Some spacers, a lock washer, and nut did the trick. Only took an hour or so, and cost me nothing but time.

Shifter is a lot firmer than it was. Not that it matters much being an automatic. But it works again.
