Flat Towing a 84 Cherokee 2 dr
Howdy....
Well not sure if this is the right place for this but here it goes...long story short I bought a 84 xj manual v6 2.8l 4wd....its my trail rig..when I bought it the guy had already cut off the back...no roll cage or any of that...that will come soon anyways...this is prob a stupid question but I got a 2006 Ford Ranger 2.3l 2wd automatic...Im looking to tow the cherokee with the ranger...basically with of those tow bars that people use with rvs to tow cars...I have seen it done with bigger trucks towing smaller vechicles.... would it be even possible to this...I know I should just get a bigger truck/suv to tow with but i like my ranger and im still paying on it...haha...your thoughts and advice would be great...seeing as how the xj is already set up for this....also one final note the xj will prob be open air meaning no doors/or no back roof..... this is the whole reason for doing this so when it gets colder..

ive had personal experience with trying to pull a small trailer with a ranger that my uncle had (upgraded to a full sized truck) and in my opinion it just did not have enough power to safely pull the trailer which was a 4 x6 loaded with boxes where i was helping him move.

the 06 swb 2wd model has a towing capacity of about 2600 pounds. the cherokee weighs in at about 3200 pounds.
you might be alright if you load the back of the ranger down with bricks to stop the xj from pushing you around corners, but then the little 2.3 won't be able to pull a fart away from a dead chicken.
so, i'd have to say no, not safely.
