Default 98 TJ trans issue

My wifes TJ has been acting up, I'm pretty sure its the trans...

I had to short stop because someone tried to pull in front of me, when I went to accelerate again (the person decided it was a good idea to actually stop at the stop sign instead of blowing it and getting tboned by me) the truck studdered. Almost like the trans slipped a tad.

Last night I went to back up our driveway, ithas a decent slope to it. As soon as the back tires started up the hill, the truck started shuddering and shaking. I immediately took my foot off the gas and put it in neutral. This stopped the shuddering.

Any one know what could possibly be happening? Low trans fluid? Bad torque converter?

The trans was rebuilt not THAT long ago, figure just long enough to probably not be under warranty any longer.

I would take it back to that shop and make them fix it, however we are now in WI and the shop is in KS.

Any and all help is appreciated.

I knew checking the fluid needs to be #1, prolly should have mentioned that.

Here's the embarrassing part....I have no idea how. I'm 90% sure there is no dip stick, and I'm a manual trans guy, so I have little experience with the auto transmissions. I'm guessing I should find the fill hole and see if its all the way full?

I want an AW4 to stuff in there so bad. :/

Look for the dipstick, it's there.

Read these.

Note: I won't have the trans fluid flushed in my vehicles. I like to have the fluid and filter changed at regular intervals, and have done so with our '04 WJ (112,000 miles)since new. Same with our '04 Saturn Vue V6 AWD (90,000 miles).

I should also mention the trans was rebuilt once already, maybe 35-40k miles ago.

Flush and filter change is prolly due.

If you're doing the fluid & filter change as most suggest, maybe you should get that deeper pan with a drain plug. It's a good idea. Then when you want to change fluid again it'll be a lot easier. Plus the deep should help it run cooler.

I have seen a few posts to the deeper pan, but no links.

Honestly, I would rather find another cracked up XJ and steal the better AW4 and swap that in. I wasn't 'around' when the trans went the first time, the wife just listened to her dad and had it rebuilt. She really juwt rebuilt a crappy trans, imo.

I can understand you on the swap.

Here's something for the deep pan.

I honestly thing we're gonna nurse this one until I swap in an AW4. And IIRC they sre direct swaps, esp if I have the entire truck to take parts from.

I've never been under the hood of an auto TJ but the dipstick is probably on the drivers side toward the rear of the intake manifold.

Im not disagreeing with you here but are you sure its the trans slipping? Could it be possible that you have a cylinder misfire? Reason I ask this is most of the trans slippage complaints I get at my shop are usually a random/intermittant cylinder misfire concern.
