Ok I shall try and rephrase.
The new Powerstroke and Duramax diesel engines cannot pass strict diesel regulations, so they inject urea into their engines (not sure exactly how this is done) which somehow reduces the amount of pollution they are emmitting, and for some reason the Cummins doesn't need this because it is a more efficient engine

Actually, urea is injected into the exhaust system catalyst (Almost like another catalytic converter) it isn't injected into the motor. I do prefer I6 configurations, however, the Duramax is a great diesel motor. The Ram's 6.7L I6 is technologically advanced compared to the Duramax and Powerjok...er...Powerstroke. The Cummins uses a cooled EGR system and a particulate filter instead of using urea injection. Anywho, I do like Cummins motors. 96xj4x4 - I can understand buying the 550 in your family's case. Good luck with it, I hope it brings you guys more profit than expense.

i would take a cummins over any other diesel. (i own one now) replacement parts are so much cheaper for the cummins diesels then the other. if you don't believe me check out the price of injectors for cummins diesels compared to a d-max or powerwhatever.
i am a huge fan of the L6 engine design anyway.
thats actually the reason i bought the truck in the first place.
