Default 1986 Ford F150 i6 Help

One of my neighbors is an older gentlemen with a 1986 F150 i6 and the water pump needs to be replaced, so I offered to lend him a hand. He doesnt have ac. In full what needs to be done is belts, water pump, upper hose, lower hose, and thermostat. Does anybody have a good writeup and or good directions on replacing his waterpump? Never worked on a ford before and I really dont want to screw his up. Any help would be nice.

Kyle It's an easy job, you won't have any trouble. No star bolts like a jeep, just be careful on the thermostat housing I've broke those off before. Go ahead and take the radiator out. You can fish the water pump out with just removing the shroud but it will save you time lining it back up when you reinstall it. Oh yea, remember to loosin the 4 little fan bolts before you take the belt off, and put RTV sealant on the thread end of the water pump bolt's on the install, just to be sure. Good luck you won't have any problems.

Thanks for the tips, it looks like an all around easy job I just get nervous when working on other peoples cars because If I screw up the jeep oh well I can fix it but if I screw up somebody else's car I would feel horrible. Fortunately it looks like he will be there aswell and he told me he already accepts all the risks. But I think the job wont be bad.

Hah the shop quoted him 550 out the door for the work, what a joke.

BTW jon do you have any idea how long it should take if I were taking my time?

I would 2hrs, the good thing about it is there's tons of room to work. Not real tight like your xj.

Kyle I actually had an '86 F150 and changed the water pump. Jon is right take out the radiator, it will be much easier, I know b/c I left mine in. Otherwise, not a bad job.

It wouldnt hurt to take the radiator to have it tested while it was out to make sure there are no small leaks and that its flowing good. Could save him some time and money down the road.

Good thinking but the rad is less then 6 months old so I dont think it should have a problem. Ill have it tested anyways.
