Are there certain years that have the AW4 transmission?
Is there a big difference in the gas mileage between the straight 6 and the 5.2? My search came up with mixed results.
Thanks

i just bought a 95 with 5.2, i average about 15-16. i dont think there is a big difference between the two. my dad has a 01 cherokee with 6 cyl and he only gets 18 and its a 2wd. i love the power of the 5.2, but they are a PAIN to work on. that engine is stuffed tight in there

There is a big diff between the 5.2 and the 4.0, gas mileage can be alot if you have the select trac 4.0 that runs in 2wd and 4wd. People dont think 3mpg diff is alot but if you are concerned about gas mileage in the long run it is. 3mpg means that when the tank is empty the 4.0 can run another 50-70 miles before needing to be refilled 50-70 miles is alot when it add's up every week.
On paper lets say the 5.2 gets 14mpg in the city, and the 4.0 gets 16.5 which i know mine gets and my mom is a lead foot. Its doesnt seem like alot but it is.
Now if you arent concerned about spending the extra $55 a month on gasoline depending on how much you drive, then i say get the V8. On average my mom spends about $250 on gasoline for the 4.0. The thing is people can say they get 15-16mpg on a 5.2 but take that with a grain of salt lol.. I doubt you'll ever see that. Expect around 13-14mpg city and 18 highway. Like trapperman for example, if heg et 15mpg on his 5.2 and dad "only" gets 18, if they drive 1,000 miles a month he is spending $50 more a month on gas then his dad. Thats $600 more a year
The power trade off tho is pretty big, the 4.0 while a good torqey engine and decent HP of around 190. Is pretty slow when going up hills, and you'll feal it sorta struggle... well not struggle but youll feal the slowness of it... The V8 on the other hand will power through a hill like it was nothing.
I would say since i got the 5.9 V8 i wouldnt go to a 4.0 unless gas prices got so rediculous that a 4.0 would be a better option to go from point A to B.

Yeah I love my 5.2, but I've never owned a 4.0L. I've ridden in my brothers '04 WJ w/the 4.0L though and wasn't impressed. I bought the ZJ to tow my tow-dolly and boat around and it's great for that. On a trip it gets between 16-19 MPG depending on how you drive. Around town your lucky to get 12-14.

Gas mileage, well the XJ is running 34s and as far as I'm concerned when it needs gas it needs gas. Wasn't looking for mileage on that!
My 97 4.0 averages 19-21 mixed city and hwy driving. 220,000 miles and counting!
My 96 5.2 ZJ believe it or not averages 23-25 mpg mixed city and hwy driving. That still has the np249 all time 4 wheel drive tcase in it also. My best tank to date so far since the new 24lb/hr injectors and 52mm tb has been 482 miles on 18 gallons of gas on a recent trip. That is 26.7 MPG with about 40% city and 60% freeway driving. 188,000 miles and climbing.
