Default WJ V8 issues?

I'm looking at WJ's and the majority are V8's. I have heard they have a lot of problems, can anyone recommend them?

Buy one...and you'll understand the phrase "it's a jeep thing". Beyond that all vehicles have problems and I have broke many parts in the bush but my GC always gets me home...and to the nearest parts store!

The following deals primarily with swaps, but it's relevant here,http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticl...ver/index.html

Have you ever looked under the hood of a 4.7L-powered Grand Cherokee? Besides looking like a nightmare to extricate, the WJ's overhead cam 4.7L is super-wide, very complex, and only puts out around 235-265hp. And again, there's very little in the way of aftermarket harness and ECU support to make the swap easy.
Repair costs due to a failed valvetrain and/or warped heads are freakishly high.

hes not asking about a swap and swap issues and warping and all that can easily be avoided with a properly functioning coolant system

I dont exactly know why people say to avoid them either. But i have a 4.7 in a 2004 WJ and a 4.7 in a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500, and for us at least we've had very very few issues with them. One is at 130k and is still running strong and the other is at 101k. The WJ the only issue we had was a front main seal leak, and a water pump seal leak. But i am sure those can be attributed to the hell we put that thing through...The dodge, never had an issue besides a radiator which gave out due to age...

But we do run our vehicles gently with all the required maintenance on time..

IMO they are great engines, not powerhouses, but good engines in stock form and when used gently.

I would say that if you are going to buy a Jeep and intend on making the Jeep do what a Jeep is built to do, that is driving it off of the beaten path; literally; that you would be miles ahead if you have/had any auto repair skills. Jeeps are fairly reliable in that their issues are usually repairable by a competent home mechanic with a decent tool set.

As with any major purchase "be careful of whose advise you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing our pasts from the disposal, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than its worth." Baz Lurhman
