The longitudinal rails are pretty strong, but the cross bars are flexible to the point where they will bend down and touch the roof with a heavy load in the center, but spring back when the load is removed. You could be okay mounting a basket type on the rails. I've had a 20 ft extension ladder in the center of the cross bars and they were all right without touching the roof, but that was aluminum, not fiberglass.
AFAIK, if you want to remove the crossbars, you have to remove the rear rail mounts and slide them off.
